Why might a young person access counselling?
Here are some reasons why a young person may wish to access counselling:
Exam stress
Anxiety Difficulty managing strong emotions Bullying Obsessions and compulsions Addictions Self-harm Low mood Identity Upsetting family circumstances Transitions and change Stress associated with being in the public eye |
Death of a person or animal
Friendship difficulties Relationship difficulties Poor body image Low confidence Upsetting past experiences Home Sickness Body Focused Repetitive Behaviours Feeling generally discontented Wanting space to talk in confidence Regular opportunity to offload and make sense of experiences |
How does counselling work?
Sessions last 50 minutes and are confidential unless I have concerns that you or somebody else is at risk of harm in some way. This means that I will not discuss or share with parents, carers or any other individual, the content of our sessions unless you give me permission or if I am concerned about your safety or the safety of another. If I do have concerns, I will only share relevant information with necessary individuals or services to keep you and others safe and will involve you where possible.
If you are under 13, I will need your parent or carer to consent to you accessing the service. Please be advised that I only work with young people aged 11 and above.
Our first session, the consultation, is an opportunity for us both to assess whether we will work well together. It is important that you feel comfortable with your counsellor so use this consultation to ask questions and get a feel for whether I am the right counsellor for you right now. I will aim to gather information about your current situation and your goals, so that I can assess whether I have the right training and approach to be of help to you.
